144 new engineering colleges in State await recognition

MADURAI: New engineering colleges in the State, which have applied for approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), will know their status in ten days.
Those colleges that get recognition will be included in the ‘Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2009’ counselling, P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University-Chennai, told The Hindu here on Sunday. “A top AICTE official visited Chennai on Saturday. We were told that the new engineering colleges will know about the approval in the next 10 days,” Dr. Jawahar said.
The Vice-Chancellor was here to visit some examination centres where the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) for MBA, MCA, M.E. and M. Tech. courses was held on Saturday and Sunday. According to him, there could be about 25,000 additional engineering seats in Tamil Nadu this academic year. Of the 144 applications, 40 come under the jurisdiction of Anna University, Chennai. The Vice-Chancellor said students seeking admission to engineering colleges need not fear or panic, as around 1.6 lakh seats would be available in Tamil Nadu this year after taking into account the additional 25,000 seats.

“Totally, 1.58 lakh applications were sold this year as against 1.28 lakh last year. Every applicant will get a seat in some college during counselling,” Dr. Jawahar said.
According to him, Anna University has already started scanning the applications for counselling. “Those students who have applied by post need not worry about postal delay even though the last date for receiving filled in applications is May 31. We will take those applications also,” he said. Till Saturday evening, the university had scanned/processed 85,000 application forms. Candidates could know the status of their application on the Anna University website ( http://www.annauniv.edu).
